BACKGROUND: The Protection Officer will be responsible for conducting case identification, appropriate referrals and psychosocial services to vulnerable people, specifically but not limited to separated and unaccompanied children, separated families, survivors of gender based violence, and people with serious security and medical concerns.
SCOPE OF WORK:
Brief description of the position’s role within the Project(s):
The Protection Officer provides case identification, psychological first aid, action and safety planning and appropriate referrals to partner organizations and services. The Protection Officer will maintain a safe space for interviews, but also regularly assess their site for risk reduction actions.
Who this position reports to: The position will report directly to the Senior Protection Officer and the site Protection Manager and will receive additional technical support from the Emergency Protection Coordinator.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Adhere to internationally recognized best practices for case management and psychosocial interventions. This includes ensuring confidentiality of clients and respect for their wishes and decisions, as well as considering the best interest of the client when the case involves children.
- Provide age-appropriate case identification and referrals, including assessment of client needs; basic, crisis counseling; development of action plans with clients; support to clients in pursuing services and support.
- Provide services to child and adolescents, including case management as well as best interest determination, age appropriate engagement and decision-making by survivors, and Do No Harm analysis.
· Establish a safe space to conduct private and confidential conversations acceptable to those on the site and safely accessible by women and children. Ensure that those within the site know where the safe space is and how to access it.
· Identify concerns related to and support adherence to referral protocols and guiding principles for gender based violence and child protection, and bring these concerns to the Protection Manager on the site.
· Maintain an effective working relationship and regular communication with their Protection Counterparts in other IRC sites.
· Maintain effective working relationships with relevant stakeholders including referral organizations community groups and other implementing partners.
· Complete daily case reports, according to guidance provided by the Protection Manager and the Emergency Protection Coordinator.
· Collaborate with the rest Protection and Information Officers to exchange information and ensure that IRC programs are responding to the evolving needs of refugees.
· Actively participate in the handover sessions between shifts
Other
· Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs.
· Participate in weekly team meetings.
Professional Standards
· All IRC staff are required to adhere to THE IRC Way Standards for Professional Conduct and the IRC country employment policies.
· While in transit sites, all IRC staff must wear appropriate IRC visibility.
REQUIREMENTS:
· University Degree in social sciences, law, public health or social work
· Minimum one year professional experience in protection programming, child protection programming, GBV programming, human rights work, counseling or community/social work
· Knowledge of national human rights organizations, local legal aid networks and the protection community operating in Lesvos preferred
· INGO experience preferred
· Demonstrated understanding of and ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for beneficiaries
· Positive and professional attitude, including ability to lead and work well in a team setting
· Strong ability to maintain composure, prioritize work under pressure, and work in a difficult environment
· Personal qualities: Works well in and promotes teamwork, comfortable in a multi-cultural environment, flexible and able to handle pressure well.
· Fluency in English. Preference will be given to candidates with fluency in the following languages: Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Kurdish.
