Background/IRC Summary:

IRC's Global Partnerships and Philanthropy (GPP) department is responsible for the global delivery of the International Rescue Committee's financial resources (currently circa USD750m per annum), and plays an important strategic role in the creation of its brand, awareness and support for its advocacy goals. The IRC's strategy centers on its ambition to continue to improve the scale and effectiveness of IRC programs worldwide with evidence of what works best to impact people's lives in conflict and fragile settings. GPP comprises colleagues and teams delivering government funding, marketing, account management, leadership gifts, board liaison, corporate partnerships and communications to support this work. These colleagues are primarily located in the USA & UK - but IRC plans to significantly expand its global fundraising footprint. Other colleagues within IRC are also engaged with private and government funding - in particular within Europe, USP and field - and we need to work in close integrated collaboration to ensure best use of resources and highest impact for IRC.

GPP has begun delivering a new radical and ambitious Private Sector strategy that will enhance IRC's ability to 'punch above its weight' in income and awareness. We are also building a new Awards Management team focused on delivering best in class donor government engagement. At the same time - believing that the root of success lie in a high performance team and culture - we need to build our internal infrastructure, ensure we build a strong global team, a dynamic culture, a forward thinking ethos, and establish 21st century analytics, reporting, operational and business management practices that will help us achieve our ambitious goals.

Job Overview/Summary:

The Director, Global Opportunities will work in close active partnership with the VP Strategic Growth, the broader GPP team, and key colleagues based in IRC global offices. S/he will be responsible for the global IRC strategic approach for the identification global opportunities and implementation of market entry strategies. Focusing on all opportunities - both private and government. Once IRC has made the decision to enter a new market, this role will ensure we run a good entry program. She/he will own the process of ensuring IRC has built the necessary infrastructure and has a clear understanding of the legal, technological and resource (including HR) requirements for successful market entry. She/he will assume ownership of new markets for 12-18 months after opening and before it graduating into a fully established program.

S/he will be the operational lead of new global opportunities - ensuring that IRC internally builds a process and culture which ensures GPP, our global fundraising colleagues and partners are best placed to succeed in any new market entry .S/he will provide key support for the rollout of our global market development plans, both from a strategic and operational perspective, working with the VP Strategic Growth to ensure effective analytics, KPIs and investment systems are in place to support and analyze performance across all new market fundraised income streams. This key role will ensure that the Department identifies and evaluates strategic opportunities for income growth, builds strong delivery partnerships with IRC's Operational teams (International Programs, Policy and Practice and US Programs) and ensures GPP partners well with HR, Finance and IT services.

Major Responsibilities:

1 Identify, evaluate and support the delivery of the expanded global footprint of global market fundraising (whether through remote or in-country approaches). This to include thoughtful planning & integration with other global IRC teams, including strong partnership with Legal and Finance colleagues. 2 Support partnership delivery of integrated funding strategies (Govt and PS), based on the strategic goals of GPP and the program division 3 Act in an entrepreneurial yet highly structured manner to identify and enable strategic new market entry 4 Support and actively engage with the GPP Senior Leadership Team, working to provide data based evidence, in order to support new market development across multiple fundraising disciplines 5 Support and work in close supportive partnership with IRC Europe colleagues, in particular ensuring strong partnership and integrated working with Europe Director of Fundraising. 6 Work with Senior Director Direct Marketing - New Markets to build and support global digital fundraising strategy and its delivery 7 Provide dynamic and effective thought leadership for IRC's efforts to support impactful delivery of the IRC's mission and IRC 2020 8 Support the delivery of the Private Sector Engagement Strategy Foundations of Talent, Business Systems and Partnership Working - ensuring clarity of purpose, establishing clear tools and guidance, and supporting, coaching and encouraging global staff buy-in. 9 Partner with IT, Finance, Legal and HR teams to ensure support for key GPP new market entry strategies and ensure the department is a good responsive partner in return. 10 Play a key role in supporting the Strategic Growth team with commitment, integrity and accountability to the "IRC Way" - IRC Global Standards for Professional Conduct.

Position directly supervises: Associate Director, Emergency Fundraising

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelors Degree

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 10-years professional work experience in modern high performance NFP fundraising, marketing or account management environments.
  • Must have proven experience of successful delivery in international contexts across multiple markets, including settings where colleagues may belong to independent entities (e.g. national committees) without direct management authority.
  • Leadership expertise and track record of success in market entry and development.
  • Developed understanding of the appropriate ways of working and business standards required to create a high performing & accountable environment for creative and dynamic colleague working.
  • Experience of implementing strategies with defined specific objectives and delivered growth in international fundraising markets.
  • Experience and knowledge of use of metrics and data to secure organizational support and drive growth and investment.
  • Experience in organizational problem solving, high performance management in complex but low resource organizations.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven track record in successful identification of new market opportunities and implementation of strategies that maximize the market potential with available budget.
  • Core competencies in international fundraising, strategic planning, team building, investment strategies.
  • The ability to influence others, to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility, tact and diplomacy
  • Entrepreneurial with the ability to rapidly adapt to changing circumstances, while maintaining focus on the end goal

New York based, USA and International travel will be required.
