Background/IRC Summary: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC works with people forced to flee from war, conflict and disaster and the host communities which support them, as well as those who remain within their homes and communities. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we improve outcomes in the areas of health, safety, economic wellbeing, education and power. Given the disparity faced by women and girls, we specifically seek to narrow inequalities in the outcomes we seek, and to ensure that women and girls achieve equally to men and boys.
The Economic Recovery and Development Unit (ERD) is responsible for providing dynamic, innovative support to IRC's field offices for their economic and livelihoods programming. This unit provides technical assistance, ensures innovation, promotes best practices, and helps to improve data collection and analysis for economic and livelihoods programming within the organization. The ERD has a lead role in developing resources to address economic recovery issues within a few weeks of a crisis. This ensures that emergency responses are designed with a good understanding of critical market systems, and local economies and livelihoods are supported, not undermined during the emergency phase.
Job Overview/Summary: The Officer for Gender Equality (GE) will be key member of the Economic Recovery and Development (ERD) unit, supporting ERD technical advisors' efforts to ensure appropriate and quality gender integration. In this role, the GE Officer will be responsible for adapting or developing tools to support gender analysis and GE program design for the economic development sector, and support the ERD unit in applying these methods. The position will work to support the documentation and sharing of best GE practices and tools in ERD to enable GE learning and understanding across country and unit staff. The GE Officer may also be responsible for contributing to special initiatives that advance the economic empowerment of women and girls, including to advocacy and research, and collaboration with other organizations and sectors serving refugees. Assist with the writing and preparation of proposals, research articles and reports or other outputs as needed to guide GE in ERD.
