Job Description

The IRC has a proud history of over 10 years of clean audits and exceptional financial management. It is key that the CFO have the technical and the managerial skills to maintain this achievement, but it is also vital that s/he be able to drive a fundamental modernization of the IRC's financial systems and structures to ensure that financial information becomes part of the lifeblood of program management across the diverse sites in which the IRC works.

The IRC needs to maintain positive partnerships with a range of organizations, including government and private donors. Given the complex controls requirements demanded by these entities, the Chief Financial Officer must oversee a rigorous and efficient reporting environment to ensure compliance.

On a day to day basis, the CFO will manage finance broadly across all functions, including accounting & controlling, budgeting & analysis, treasury, and programs finance (US and International). S/he is responsible for a staff of over 40 people based in New York City and for a central budget for finance of approximately $6 million. In addition to direct staff, the CFO will work with a matrix finance organization of 300+ staff across field offices globally.

The CFO works closely with Audit and Finance Committees of the Board of Directors. In addition, the CFO is part of the Leadership Board of the organization, comprising the top strategic and operating managers of the IRC.

  • Ensure a robust financial planning and analysis function to provide real-time insights regarding organization financials, drive improvements and efficiencies across the organization, and align resources to strategy
  • Evaluate and lead the continuous development of finance talent and enhance the team with strategic finance leaders who are high value problem solvers
  • Provide leadership and partnership in implementing the new ERP system including process assessment and redesign
  • Demonstrate a "field first" approach with regular/quarterly visits to key international locations/offices
  • Manage the accounting systems, processes and procedures to record, monitor and report on the organization's assets and liabilities in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and all regulatory requirements
  • Oversee the development of financial models and business cases to evaluate strategic initiatives and investments as well as ongoing monitoring of return on investment
  • Ensure the processes and timely preparation of all financial statements and reporting, including regular financial statements to management, regulatory agencies and the Board
  • Liaise regularly with and support the Chair of the Audit Committee of the IRC Board
  • Serve as the primary interface with the external auditors and Audit Partner; oversee the annual audit of the organization's financial statements by its external auditors on a timely basis
  • Advise the Chief Executive Officer on developments in financial management practices and reporting, including potential and actual changes in accounting principles as well as tax, regulatory and reporting requirements for government funded organizations; advise leadership on ways to improve the efficiency of the organization's financial practices

Minimum Qualifications

The IRC CFO is an experienced finance leader with a track record of building and maintaining an innovative and agile finance organization and its processes.

  • S/he has experience in a complex global regulated environment; experience in government contracting and/or grant making organizations
  • A track-record as a hands-on, proactive and engaged partner who has contributed to strategic and operational success in an organization or division of scale
  • An experienced global finance executive with strong technical knowledge and the agility to transition from high level strategy projects to detailed financial line items
  • Demonstrated success in devising and implementing a robust finance infrastructure (i.e. people, process, system upgrades/implementations)
  • A track record of setting a clear and compelling vision for a finance organization to support enterprise goals and the ability to revise and execute that to meet the organizational goals and needs of the IRC
  • The successful candidate is experienced in an interdisciplinary and high-performance environment that reflects the professionalism and standing of the IRC in the humanitarian community
  • S/he is experienced forging collaborative relationships with the operational and programmatic sides of an organization and contributing to an open, team-oriented environment
  • The successful candidate has demonstrated well-honed strategic thinking skills and the ability to be flexible and adaptable and revise strategies as necessary
