Somalia: Assistant Midwife - Mogadishu

BACKGROUND

The International Rescue Committee has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict and disaster affected communities. The IRC has been operational in Central Somalia (Mudug and Galgadud regions) and Mogadishu implementing interventions in the areas of livelihood, WASH and health reaching out to more than 200,000 conflict and drought affected people.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to Health facility midwife, the Assistant midwife is responsible for assisting the nurse-‐midwife in creating a safe and peaceful birthing environment, and assist with care of women under the direction and supervision of Midwifery.

Major Responsibilities

  • Giving support and advice on the daily care of the baby, including breast feeding, bathing and making up feeds;
  • Support the midwives in preparing equipment, sterilization and maintaining asset registration.
  • Assist the midwives during the delivery and follow ups of mothers
  • Ensure that beneficiaries understand the importance of follow visits (ANCs/PNCs)
  • Providing advice and guidance on a safe and timely transfer home;
  • Liaising with agencies and other health and social care professionals to ensure continuity of care;
  • Engaging in professional development to meet PREP (post-registration education and practice) requirements;
  • Assists in the preparation of infant feeds.
  • Monitors and record BP, Pulse, Temperature and blood sugar level.
  • Maintenance of observation charts including fluid balance charts.
  • Strip, disinfecting and making up beds and cots as required.
  • Assist in cleaning and supplies of equipment.
  • Support women in transitional care and rooming in room.
  • Participating in the training and supervision of junior colleagues.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Head of Midwives in the health center.
  • Assess and care for patients presenting with uncomplicated wounds.
  • Support and advice women requesting information relating to family planning needs.
  • Support and manage health needs of women presenting for cervical cytology consultation.
  • Implement and participate in vaccination and immunization programmers for new born babies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma in provision of basic nursing services from a recognized institution. Relevant regular trainings from a credible health organization
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in a health program set up
  • Willing to travel and live in difficult and remote areas

Required Competencies:

  • A mature person of high professional discipline and moral integrity,
  • Knowledge of local Somali language.
  • Previous experience within a humanitarian aid organization, in particular working in primary health care programs and conducting nursing.
  • Strong counseling skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Competent to work under stress as the situation may dictate.
  • Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic background.
