BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK: The Development Intern will be a part of an interdisciplinary team that works across all departments in the organization. Major initiatives of the Development department are fundraising, proposal development, donor cultivation, community engagement, and research. This position represents a unique opportunity for students to gain practical work experience and increase their understanding of relevant issues related to their field of studies. The Development Intern will assist with the identification of appropriate grantors, and the execution and submission of grant requests. As part of a growing grants management office, the Development Intern will research funding opportunities within fixed guidelines, research country- and context-specific conditions and statistics, and assist in writing grant proposals. The intern will have a unique opportunity to specialize in one area of development work or be cross trained in various programmatic areas. This role requires strong writing skills, has a high interaction with people, and the individual should enjoy working in a team environment.
Internship Tracks (Please select one or if multiple rank preferences)
Proposal Development:
· Complete prospect identification, research, proposal development and writing in conjunction with other IRC co-workers
· Complete accurate and timely production of final proposals
· Assist with updating and maintaining the IRC’s grants database
· Research potential major donor prospects
· Conduct online research that takes into account the multi-faceted work of the IRC
Fundraising:
- Help translate the IRC’s narrative for the benefit of donor understanding and support
- Assess and provide support to all departments in identifying strategic program needs
- Identify possible in-kind donations and facilitate delivery or pick-up of donations
- Maintain grant reporting and updating grant databases

External Relations:
- Work with Development team to plan, create, and execute meaningful outreach materials
- Help create new and support existing relationships with organizations, corporations, family foundations, and civic organizations who are interested in learning more about refugees and the work of the IRC
- Research best practices for proposal development, fundraising metrics, and major gifts solicitation
- Assist with advocacy needs and disseminate public education about the impact of the IRC
- Work with Development team to coordinate community outreach and events

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

- To create meaningful opportunities for individuals, businesses, corporations and community stakeholders to engage with the work of the organization at a high profile international NGO
- To learn about nonprofit management and strategic planning in conjunction with public and private fundraising opportunities
- To maintain and foster relationships with institutional funders and provide appropriate stewardship throughout grant life
REQUIREMENTS:
- Excellent computer skills: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, outlook
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Desire to work in the human services field in context to social services delivery
- Cultural sensitivity and desire to work in a multi-cultural environment
This position reports to the Program Coordinator

This position is for the fall 2018 semester beginning in August/September and requires a 3 month commitment. The internship will be posted until filled.
