IRC BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. One aspect of the IRC is to provide assistance to refugees resettling in the United States. The IRC opened a Denver office in 2016 to provide reception and placement services to newly arrived refugees. The office is slated to resettle approximately 250 refugees per year and provide additional program services to assist refugees and other eligible populations for up to five years following their arrival in the U.S. IRC in Denver’s service approach is client-centered, empowerment-focused, trauma-informed and multigenerational.
JOB OVERVIEW:
The Health Program Aide is responsible for helping newly arrived refugees meet their immediate and ongoing health needs by assisting them in obtaining their initial medical screenings through contracted health providers in Colorado and facilitating follow up appointments as necessary. Together with the health team and with clients, the Health Program Aide supports individuals and families to ensure they access and effectively utilize primary care, by providing health orientations, health-focused home visits and individualized education, and bus orientation. This position reports to the Health Program Coordinator and works cross-functionally to coordinate client support across internal teams and with external community partners.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Transport IRC clients to and from their refugee medical screening and follow-up appointments;
- Assist those who are referred for follow-up services to reach their appointments through direct transportation when necessary or through assistance such as reminder calls and bus route mapping;
- Contact clients to remind them of scheduled appointments and confirm transportation plans;
- Assist with patient navigation including resolving Medicaid issues and following up on referrals;
- In concert with the health team, conduct client surveys to assess barriers to accessing primary care;
- Collaborate with the Health Program Coordinator on the development of measurement tools to assess efficacy of health programming;
- Assist in the development of highly visual, culturally-sensitive health education materials to ensure the content is accessible to semi-literate, non-literate and pre-literate individuals;
- Conduct health orientations and health-focused home visits for newly arrived clients, following state, federal and donor guidelines;
- Provide customized bus orientations to new arrivals to support independent navigation to and from their primary care provider/medical home;
- Work closely with interpreters to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate services;
- Aid clients in developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed to succeed in the U.S.;
- Support gender equality and promote full participation of women and girls in programs and services;
- Maintain electronic and physical case file documentation in a timely and accurate manner;
- Become familiar and collaborate with colleague refugee service provider organizations to facilitate client access to holistic services and support;
- Build rapport with clients through verbal and non-verbal communication;
- Coordinate efforts with interns, volunteers, family mentors and others directly supporting clients;
- Establish and maintain working knowledge of the Reception & Placement (R&P) and Colorado Alliance for Refugee Empowerment and Success (CARES) programs, as well as the requirements of grant funds awarded by the Colorado Health Foundation;
- Fully engage in all program meetings, staff development activities and training opportunities;
- Comply with all policies, procedures and protocols of the agency; and
- Perform other duties as requested.

Position Directly Supervises: Oversees and guides health program volunteers and interns
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience in human services field is ideal;
- Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is required;
- Fluency in Russian, Dari, Burmese, Kiswahili or other languages and cultures of the local refugee population is highly strongly preferred;
- Experience in working with refugees or in refugee resettlement is highly desirable;
- Working knowledge of Medicaid a plus;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrated success working in a multi-cultural environment;
- Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member;
- Commitment to promoting participation, self-reliance, sustainability, equity and human dignity;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), internet applications and relational database use required; familiarity with Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database is a plus;
- Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel frequently throughout the service delivery area; and
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and occasional weekends.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Standard office work environment with considerable time in the field.
- Frequent travel in and around the service delivery area.
- Ability to safely lift 35 lbs.
- Hours outside of typical office hours required regularly.
