United States of America: NJ Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA) Education Specialist

In August 2019, IRC in New Jersey will host a three week summer program focusing on English as a Second Language (ESL) enrichment and psychosocial support for refugee youth living in and around Elizabeth, New Jersey. Up to 90 students in six classes, aged 5 – 20, from at least 10 countries will participate in academics, creative arts, recreational activities, and social-emotional learning (SEL). Field trips will be held once per week. The Education Specialist will work closely with the Youth Program Coordinator to design ESL and SEL curriculum, train ESL teachers, volunteers, and other staff, and oversee RYSA academic instruction.

Anticipated Position Term: May 1-September 6

Anticipated Hours: IRC anticipates the Education Specialist will work approximately 20 hours per week in May and June, then full-time in July and August, though this is subject to change.

Major Responsibilities:

Prior to summer program

  • Develop thematic and curriculum framework for ESL teachers
  • Assist in developing class schedules with age-appropriate activities in each of four classes, including field trips
  • Assist in development of appropriate assessment tools to measure program effectiveness
  • Assist with design of communication and outreach, including orientation for families
  • Participate in RYSA staff and volunteer screening and interviews

Training week

  • Collaborate with teachers and external facilitators to ensure all activities effectively engage students and work towards promoting English language learning
  • Assist in planning and co-facilitating training for teachers, volunteers, and other staff during training week, including parts of IRC’s Safe Healing and Learning Spaces model

During summer program

  • Ensure classroom environment is welcoming, nurturing and supportive to refugee students
  • Provide ongoing support and instruction to lead teachers and program volunteers; serve as their primary point of contact when summer program is in operation
  • Facilitate weekly check-ins with teaching staff
  • Facilitate daily staff meetings during RYSA
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide feedback on instruction
  • Collect and review weekly lesson plans and offer feedback to teachers
  • Coordinate data collection for monitoring and evaluation
  • Act as a positive role model for students and staff

Post-program follow up

  • Assist with analysis of student assessment data to measure program effectiveness
  • Prepare a report with data and analysis
  • Ensure program site is left clean and orderly
  • Send appropriate thank you correspondence to all volunteers and donors
  • Coordinate instructional staff exit procedures

Other Responsibilities

  • Take on special projects or support roles as needed
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in Education, TESOL/ELL certification highly recommended

Work Experience:

  • At least 5 years’ experience working with English language learners, particularly those with interrupted formal education and those impacted by war trauma
  • At least 3 years’ experience supervising in an educational setting
  • Experience working with youth and/or refugee/immigrant populations

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal, and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Cross-cultural or overseas experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft computer applications and internet research
  • Ability to take initiative and problem-solve effectively in high stress situations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Language Skills:

  • English language fluency required. Fluency in other languages such as Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Kiswahili, French, and Spanish is a plus

Working Environment*:* RYSA will be held at a school facility or University facility in Elizabeth, Roselle, or Union. Travel is necessary to accompany students and staff on field trips.
