Background

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (www.rescue.org) is a world leader in relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict development services for those uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression. The IRC is currently working in over 25 countries around the world, addressing both the immediate and life saving needs of conflict affected people in emergencies and the reconstruction needs of post-conflict societies.

Position Overview
The IRC is implementing a GBV emergency preparedness and response project that will support local organizations in improving access to life saving services for survivors of GBV and reducing risks for women and girls in humanitarian emergencies. This position will support the training of selected organizations in GBV emergency preparedness and response as well as organizational capacity building in humanitarian preparedness and response. The Officer will also be responsible for assisting in the development of GBV preparedness and/or response projects, and supporting selected organizations in the implementation of these projects. The Officer will monitor the progress of the projects towards indicators and support a Real Time Evaluation to ensure implementation in accordance with the overall project’s goal and objective.

Requirements

  • University degree in Gender Studies, Social Studies, Public Health, Social Work or related field
  • Minimum two years of demonstrated experience in community work, preferably with refugees, internally displaced people and/or programs that serve women and girls
  • Experience with programs focused on GBV, women’s empowerment, adolescent girls, or women’s health are highly desirable.
  • Awareness of the particular protection needs and risks of displaced women and girls
  • Demonstrated experience implementing participatory program approaches
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Training and capacity building skills - coaching and mentoring and developing staff in particular
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient in written and spoken English and Somali language
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; Good team player
  • Flexibility, commitment, patience and a good sense of humor
  • Emotional maturity and stability to deal with conflict and confrontation in non-violent way and maintain appropriate boundaries
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of sensitivity and discretion, ability to communicate sensitively and without judgment
