Job Summary: The U.S. Programs Communications Manager will execute communications strategies positioning the IRC as the thought and practice leader of the humanitarian sector, as it relates to refugee resettlement and protection in the U.S.. He/she will support the USP Communications Officer and Global Communications Director in proactive and reactive communications work on the global refugee crisis and refugee resettlement in the US, as well as support executive communications including the U.S. Programs VP and SVP. This position is based at the IRC's headquarters in New York.
Major Responsibilities:
- Work with a dynamic range of IRC teams to support the development and implementation of communications strategies that drive IRC's profile objectives and supporting fundraising and advocacy objectives.
- Work with internal stakeholders including communications team-members, field teams, advocates and technical experts to develop and maintain talking points on key issues, draft op-eds and support coordination of digital content.
- Proactively and creatively develop and pitch IRC spokespeople and stories to target media and influencers including TV news, radio coverage and IRC-led features, with a strategic mindset.
- Expand and maintain up to date media lists and influencer databases.
- Respond to media queries-providing accurate information, arranging interviews and facilitating media visits to field programs, including during emergencies and breaking news.
- Coach and prepare staff for media interviews
- Help organize press briefings, media conference calls and public-facing IRC events.
- Coordinate and publicize field visits and other activities of high-profile IRC supporters.
- Expand and nurture IRC's communications network

Other Internal and/or external contacts:
Internal: Work with global communications colleagues, writers, content creators, IRC U.S. programs staff at HQ/offices, advocacy and fundraising peers.
External: Work with journalists, media producers and editors, strategic influencers and coalitions.
Job Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, international affairs or related field.
Work Experience: 2-4 years of professional experience in communications, media or advocacy, preferably within a mission driven organization or team
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:
- Knowledge of - and track record of success - working with top tier media covering "above the fold" domestic, international and humanitarian issues.
- Experience in producing and editing, under tight-deadlines, accurate and dynamic communications materials including press-releases, op-eds and talking points.
- Record of creativity in developing compelling content, design skills a plus.
- Experience working with both junior and senior people inside and outside a public profile organization with speed, fluency and accountability.
- Ability to work effectively, efficiently, diplomatically and calmly in a high-pressure environment on issues that are often complex and politically sensitive.
