BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK: The Logistics Intern is needed to assist the Logistics Specialist at the IRC Silver Spring Office. The primarily responsibility of the Logistics Specialist is preparing for the arrival of new refugees by assuring safe, sanitary, and furnished housing is secured for each new family. This position will entail approximately half of the internship in the field and half inside the office.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the field with furnishing new homes and transporting donations as needed
- Assist with electronic entry of client data and expenses
- Assist with physical case file management
- Assist with tracking and valuing donations
- Assist in research of new housing partners
- Other related duties as assigned
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Intern will learn how housing is secured and prepared for newly arriving refugees
- Intern will acquire knowledge of programs and public benefits available for refugees during their resettlement period
- Intern will gain US office experience interacting with a diverse staff and refugee population
- Intern will gain experience managing physical and electronic filing systems
- Intern will learn reporting requirements for resettlement agencies and how capturing this data improves services
REQUIREMENTS:
- Current undergraduate, graduate student, or less than 12 months out of school*
- Full time 40 hours per week preferred, with a minimum time commitment of 15 hours per week and a minimum of 3 working days per week
- Organized with utmost attention to detail
- Computer literate with the ability to learn new software and tasks
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills
- Experience or interest working with refugee and humanitarian issues
- Able and willing to lift and carry up to 75 pounds approximately bi-weekly (E.g., carrying half of a couch during apartment setup)
- A car or access to a car is preferred, but not required.

Note: This is an unpaid internship; school credit may be received depending on your program and institution.
*Candidates applying who are not currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or are outside 12 months of their graduation will be processed as volunteers.
