BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The youth program aims to promote as well as guide families towards self-sufficiency and parental engagement. Through home visits, referrals to afterschool programing, and adjustment groups for parents/guardians, the IRC assists families in navigating the often difficult networks or services within the American public school system.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess educational background of eligible students resettled by the IRC and other resettlement agencies to determine barriers to school attendance: medical, transportation, specialized academic needs etc.
  • Assist with facilitation of school orientations for youth and parents, explaining the US educational system, school culture, roles and responsibilities, U.S. laws, safety, etc.
  • Coordinate introductory meetings and follow ups as needed with teachers, parents, and students
  • Conduct regularly scheduled home visits with students and their families to address academic and integration issues
  • Provide case management services to include, but not limited to: referring and linking youth/parents to services in the community, maintaining an up to date client records/database, and coordinating with relevant resettlement staff
  • Support afterschool activities designed to serve program participants (As needed)
  • Contribute to youth program development and organizational growth, strategic planning, outreach and advocacy activities and events as needed
  • This position reports to Youth Caseworker
  • Perform other duties as required

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Student will gain case management skills including: defining learning objectives, identifying and developing actions steps to address barriers to integration and self-sufficiency
  • Student will build confidence and skills speaking publicly and in a multicultural environment
  • Student will learn about the US refugee resettlement system and services and benefits available to refugees and asylees in the State of Maryland and across the US

REQUIREMENTS:

· Experience or demonstrated interest in education and training, preferably in a refugee or multicultural context

· Education majors preferred

· Available at least three days per week minimum

· Positive and upbeat demeanor preferred

· Ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member in a multicultural environment

· Organized with fine attention to detail and great flexibility

· Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects and ability to work independently

• Experience with youth preferred

• Ability to work independently with limited supervision

• Willingness to take on new task and challenges

This position reports to the Youth Caseworker.

Note: This is an unpaid internship; school credit may be received depending on your program and institution.

*Candidates applying who are not currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or are outside 12 months of their graduation will be processed as volunteers.

This position is for the fall 2018 semester beginning in August/September and requires a 3 month commitment. The internship will be posted until filled.

Currently, 92% of our funding goes directly to programming to support our clients, and your help to cover this cost will ensure that no funding is directed away from serving our clients. Instructions will be provided after you have been selected to intern or volunteer.
